Sport Injuries : ACL (vol II)
ACL injuries are among the most common sport related knee injuries. Approximately 100,000 – 200,000 people in the United States acquire a torn or ruptured ACL every year. But what exactly is the ACL, and how is it injured?
The ACL is a strong ligament in the knee known as the anterior cruciate ligament. It runs anterior from the femur to the tibia connecting the two bones together. The ACL’s purpose is to control movement at the knee joint. It limits side to side motion at the knee as well as prevents the knee from extending beyond its normal range of motion.
ACL injuries often occur during athletic activities such as soccer, football, and skiing. They mostly happen when one stops suddenly with the foot planted firmly on the ground. This action causes an over extension of the knee with the tibia moving too far forward on the femur. This stresses the ACL beyond its normal limits causing a tear of the ligament.

Sport Injuries : ACL (vol I)
What is an ACL injury?
One of the most common problems involving the knee joint is an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The anterior cruciate ligament (also called the ACL) is one of four ligaments that are critical to the stability of the knee joint. A ligament is made of tough fibrous material and functions to control excessive motion by limiting joint mobility. Of the four major ligaments of the knee, the ACL injury is the most common knee ligament injury.
What is the normal function of the ACL?
The anterior cruciate ligament is the primary restraint to forward motion of the shin bone (tibia). The anatomy of the knee joint is critical to understanding this relationship.
Essentially, the femur (thigh bone) sits on top of the tibia (shin bone), and the knee joint allows movement at the junction of these bones. Without ligaments to stabilize the knee, the joint would be unstable and prone to dislocation. The ACL prevents the tibia from sliding too far forward.
The ACL also contributes stability to other movements at the joint including the angulation and rotation at the knee joint. The ACL performs these functions by attaching to the femur on one end, and to the tibia on the other. The other major ligaments of the knee are the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and the medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL and LCL, respectively).
What happens when there is an ACL injury?
When an ACL injury occurs, the knee becomes less stable. The ACL injury is a problem because this instability can make sudden, pivoting movements difficult, and it may make the knee more prone to developing arthritis and cartilage tears.
Why are ACL tears such a big problem?
When the knee is unstable, patients often complain of a sensation that the knee will 'give out' from under them. When this giving way sensation is because of an ACL injury, the knee joint is sliding too much. This can be a problem because each episode of instability (the 'giving way' sensation) can cause damage to the knee cartilage. Therefore an ACL injury makes patients more prone to developing arthritis and meniscus tears.
Athletes often have particular difficulty once they have sustained an ACL injury. Many sports require a functioning ACL to perform common maneuvers such as cutting, pivoting, and sudden turns. These high demand sports sports include, but are not limited to:
- Football
- Soccer
- Basketball
- Skiing
- Gymnastics
- Hockey (Ice and Field)
- Wrestling
- Lacrosse
- Rugby
Patients may be able to function in their normal daily activities without a normal ACL, but these high-demand sports may prove difficult. Therefore, athletes are often faced with the decision to undergo surgery in order to return to their previous level of competition.
What factors contribute to ACL injuries?
ACL injuries can strike anyone, but there are certainly some individuals more prone to ACL injury. Sports listed above can cause high forces to be placed on the ACL. Participants in these sports are especially prone to ACL injury. Another factor that contributes to ACL injuries is the gender of the patient. In college basketball, women players may be up to 8 times more likely than their male counterparts to sustain an ACL injury. There are different theories as to why women are especially susceptible to ACL injury.

Lin Dan ... the MR. RUDE
Lin Dan is the one of the best & greatest player in the 2k ERA,
but he is also a rude guy ... also has a horrible attitude,
below is the final match of Malaysia Open 2006 in KL.
World Best Player : Taufik Hidayat
Taufik Hidayat (born August 10, 1981, Bandung, Jawa Barat, Indonesia) is an Indonesian badminton player and his height is 176 cm. He is a former world champion and the current Olympic champion in the men's singles. He also won the Indonesian Open six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006).
When he was young, he joined the SGS Club, a badminton club in Bandung. Having been trained by Iie Sumirat, Taufik learned his characteristic confusing and tricky net play.
Hidayat played badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men' singles, defeating Hidetaka Yamada of Japan and Wong Choong Hann of Malaysia in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, Hidayat defeated Peter Gade of Denmark 15-12, 15-12. Hidayat advanced to the semifinals, in which he beat Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 15-9, 15-2. Playing in the gold medal match, he defeated Korean Shon Seung Mo 15-8, 15-7 to win the gold medal. In August 2005, he defeated world number one Lin Dan of China, 15-3, 15-7 in the men's singles final of the IBF World Championships.
ATTRIBUTES:
Hidayat's qualities are his backhand, forehand drop shot (reverse slice in particular) and net-play.He has weaknesses in is his reluctance to kill from high forehand clears, his impatience with loud crowds and his penchant for returning a net dribble with a net dribble, even when the opponent is dangerously close to the net.
His style mirrors Zhao Jianhua to some reviewers.Hidayat is known for his relaxed smooth playing style. His lack of consistency and mental fortitude are often points of criticism. On top of this amazing players profile, he also has a terrific record. He was the number 1 seed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, at the age of 19. He also won his first Indonesia Open title when he was just 18. He had got the All England final when he was 17.
But among the countless things he has done, the most remarkable is that of Asian Junior championship title. When Taufik was 17, he became the best player in the world, after retaining the world no.1 spot for several months he won the Asian Junior championship title after. Taufik was defeated three times by Lin Dan in 2006, at the Thomas Cup semi-final tie,Japan Open final and the Hong Kong Open where Taufik forfeited the match after whathe thought was a bad line call at 4-1 to Lin in the first game.
Taufik defeated Lin Dan in the final of the 2006 Asian Games individual event on December 9 after losing twice to him in three days in the team event preliminaries and semi-finals. Taufik has an 8-4 losing record at present against Lin Dan, his ultimate rival.
